Making a bong is something all you potheads may have some experience of. Itīs a work that demands creativity and craftsmanship. Potsmoking is usually a social thing and it is always fun to have an original and smooth bonger a part of your group. This is something we wanted to experience more often and therefore we became more ambitious when making our bongs. This probably gave us the idea of a competition in bong making.

We hold the olympics twice a year, summer and winter. They have been held all around Iceland and in Copenhagen, Denmark. A trip to Amsterdam is the plan for this years summer olympics.

To enter the olympics each member of all teams must pay a fee of 1 gr. premium buds for testing the bongs and the winners prize. The teams consist of 2-3 individuals and they have to be very discreet about what they are doing so the atmosphere is filled with silence and secrecy.

Each team has a scoresheet which includes five categories:

  1. First impression
  2. Originality and concept
  3. Craftsmanship
  4. Procedure
  5. Smoothness

1 - 5 points are given for each category.

As you can see, there are many things you have to bear in mind when you start designing yo bong. For example, the teams often prepare a good introduction, even a show. Sometimes they wear costumes, play tunes that fit their act and hand out joints or "jaun" as we call it. This provides prima atmosphere and the groove is on.

At the end the scores are summed up and the winner announced. The winning team then rolls the olympic torch which has to be the biggest one yet. The one in Copenhagen was 40 cm (16 inches).

After five hours of budsmoking we fly home to the comfort of our belovable beds where adventures await or "einn bólu heima" as we call it in Iceland when your mind takes you to unexplored utopias.

The bongolympics will probably never be defined as a conventional event by the common citizens or become popular among them. It is simply too vast a concept for them to comprehend.
